We often think of discipline as relating to punishment. And self discipline can carry a connotation of self flagellation to keep ourselves in line. For quite some time, I’ve been re-framing what discipline really is. The word discipline comes from the word disciple. So, I’ve been internalizing it more in the vein of directed learning. Yes, we sometimes learn from consequences of mis-steps. Some lessons aren’t always very comfortable. As we walk into new paradigms, centered in the tenets of shamanism (empathy, tolerance, generosity, charity, mercy), it is time to look at self discipline in a new light. I am learning to see it more as a process of understanding myself, rather than forcing myself to do things. It is a process of self healing, and busting personal myths. An added bonus, is in learning this for myself, it assists me in my relationships with my kids, and my prospective students.
